24th January 2013- International Symposium: "New Animal Breeding Technologies Contribute to Food Security"

On the 24th of January, prof. Galli was invited as a speaker at the International Symposium "New Animal Breeding Technologies Contribute to Food Security", held on the occasion of the "Green Week" in Berlin. The meeting organized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute (FLI), Federal Research Institute for Animal Welfare, was attended by over 70 participants who discussed how the technologies of the XXI century can help address global challenges related to food safety and livestock production.

Prof. Galli gave a talk focused on current cloning technologies and to the symposium also participated as speakers, Heiner Niemann (FLI), who described the use of biotechnology, Christel Happach-Kasan, a member of the German Parliament, who spoke of the legislation on the breeding animals and their future in Europe. Mark Walton (Recombinetics), presented a report on the current use of animal cloning in breedings programs and its potential contribution to the development of new technologies in animal breeding, while the reports of Paul Renard (National Institute of Agricultural Research) and Peter Sandoe (University of Copenhagen) were focused on animal welfare, ethical issues and their impact on society.

As a conclusion shared by all the speakers, that new animal breeding technologies could make a significant contribution in order to obtain an efficient, targeted and sustainable production, although the use of new animal breeding technologies and their acceptance by the society, varies from country to country in Europe and outside Europe.
