Avantea is proud to announce our participation in NHPig, a European research project funded by the Innovative Health Initiative with a budget of €17.5 million. NHPig aims to reduce the use of non-human primates (NHPs) in preclinical research by utilizing mini- and micro-pigs, developing the scientific tools and knowledge needed to replace these animal models with more sustainable alternatives.
Why is NHPig important?
Before a new medicine is tested in humans, a series of safety tests must be conducted. While many tests are performed using in vitro methods or computer models, some still require animals, including non-human primates. However, the European Union actively promotes the development of ethical alternatives to reduce NHP use, and that is where NHPig comes in.
What will the project do?
NHPig will focus on:
- Detailed characterization of mini- and micro-pigs, addressing scientific knowledge gaps, particularly in immune system studies.
- Developing new tools, including biomarkers for liver and kidney toxicity, validated antibodies, and non-invasive sensors for continuous physiological monitoring.
- Creating a digital platform and publicly accessible database with data on mini-/micro-pigs, non-human primates, and humans.
- Promoting compliance with European ethical and scientific standards through dedicated advisory boards.
A consortium of excellence
NHPig is a 5-year public-private partnership bringing together 27 international partners, including universities, research centers, and industry leaders. The project is coordinated by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Germany) and Novo Nordisk A/S (Denmark), with the support of Avantea and other prestigious European partners.
Our commitment
Avantea is proud to contribute to a project that aims to transform preclinical research by promoting the 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), advancing ethical and innovative science for a better future.
