17th-18th May 2017 - Cremona: TransLink Project Meeting

On the 17th and 18th of May 2017, Avantea has hosted the TRANSLINK project’s general meeting at the Chamber of Commerce in Cremona.

TRANSLINK is a project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Program, which aims at defining the role of xeno-directed and autoimmune events in patients receiving animal-derived bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV). Evidence has been presented at the meeting that immunological reactions can be the cause of BHV failure.

Approximately 300,000 patients each year benefit from BHVs, which are the second most common cause of cardiac surgery. BHV implants suffer from long-term dysfunctions that preclude their application in young patients. Based on a retrospective and prospective analysis of a sample of about 1700 BHV-transplanted patients and control patients from 4 major cardiac surgery centers in the EU, TRANSLINK proposes first to clarify the possible role of the immune response of patients BHV as a cause of mid- and long-term clinical dysfunction.
