In buffaloes, as in cattle, reproductive techniques refer to mass produced embryo, from groups of ovaries obtained from slaughtered animals, and Genetic Rescue if the embryos are produced from a single slaughtered buffalo (obtaining embryos with both proven maternity and paternity). The oocyte retrieval can also be done from buffaloes in the herd with the Ovum Pick Up technique, followed by fertilization with the selected bull and then transfer or embryo freezing. Comparing to bovine, superovulation technique in buffalo does not give good results. For this reason the use of in vitro fertilization is the only way to increase the use of the best females and to allow genetic progress in this species.
